On the Brink of Balance
Next Thursday, the 24th, I will be one of the many hopping on a plane to be with my family for the holidays. I will greet them grateful for another year, eager to hear the latest family gossip and "trash-talking," ready to eat until my heart is content, yet hungry for some much needed down-time.
You see, once again, I reach this time of the year totally and completely exhausted, a revelation I sheepishly admit because I am fatigued for all the right reasons. I am living out a dream, experiencing the fruit of seeds planted a long, long time ago and nurtured throughout the years. It is truly an exciting time. But I cannot help wonder how much more joyous the season would feel if I weren't so damn tired. Can you relate?
Despite knowing that December is coming, it always seems to "sneak up" on me. In addition to the normal social commitments of the holiday season (and book related activities this year), December is also a time for me to reflect on the current year and prepare for what I hope will be (and plan and pray for) a bountiful and productive year to come. This is when I purge and organize, layout my personal goals and aspirations, and start to work on my business and marketing plans. This is when I realize that I'm always teetering on the brink of balance, yet never quite experiencing it. My intentions and best-efforts seem to always be greater than my resources of time, energy, focus, and money on hand.
It is true, I am feeling overwhelmed at the moment. But relief is an hour away, and I realized this from a coaching client.
I'm currently working with a client on a year-long engagement. Our December session is this week and I was reviewing my notes from our last one, the one where I suggested that this client set aside an hour every Sunday to work on her business plan. The one where I emphasized how important it is that this time be uninterrupted and in an environment with little to few distractions; I encouraged her to turn off her phone, close out her email account (or disable the new message alert), turn off her television, and if she listens to music to select a playlist that wouldn't inspire her to sing-a-long. As I looked at my notes, I realized one of the reasons I was feeling so drained. I was telling her to do exactly what I was not doing! Ouch...
I believe in "walking the talk" and endeavor to practice that which I advise. So, with the sixteen days left to 2010, I've adjusted not the grand plans I have but the pacing at which they will be done. There are some things I've given up on in terms of having them complete by 12/31 -- it just ain't gonna happen. And, I've made a commitment to spend an hour a day on those things that are on the list.
More than likely, my body will still be exhausted when I deplane next week, but my spirits will at least be high. Day one into what I call the one-hour approach and I already feel lighter. My moment of conviction was also my moment of liberation. I couldn't ask for a better gift this holiday season.

Financial Intimacy: 2009 Highlights
A deep sense of gratitude to everyone for your support. I appreciate: all the notes of congratulations and well-wishes; those of you who purchased a copy (or several); those of you who introduced the book to your network of family, friends, and colleagues; those of you who hosted an event; the email messages sharing what impact the book has had on you (please keep them coming); and, I really appreciated seeing familiar faces at various events this fall.
This is just the beginning...paradigm shifts happen gradually. But how wonderful it is for me to have you share in this incredible journey with me! Thank you.
